For a busy commercial kitchen, a wash-down area or any process producing grease, moisture or corrosive fumes, stainless steel often earns its higher upfront cost very quickly. The right answer depends on what the duct is carrying, where it is installed and what standard of durability you expect.

Galvanised vs stainless ducting: what changes in practice?

On paper, both materials can form part of an effective ventilation or extraction system. Both can be fabricated into straight runs, bends, branches and bespoke sections. Both can support good airflow when the system is designed properly. The real difference is how they behave over time under working conditions.

Galvanised ducting is typically made from mild steel coated with zinc. That zinc layer helps protect the underlying steel from rust, which makes galvanised sections cost-effective and widely used across general ventilation projects. It is a practical option where the airstream is relatively clean and dry, and where the environment is not especially aggressive.

Stainless ducting is different by design. Rather than relying on a surface coating, the material itself offers strong corrosion resistance. In demanding environments, that matters.
