Canopy Overhang and Clearance: The Numbers That Actually Matter

How to Size Commercial Kitchen Canopies Correctly

Getting canopy overhang and clearance right isn't guesswork — it follows practical rules used across the UK commercial kitchen industry.

Overhang Rule

A canopy should extend a minimum of 15-30cm beyond the front and sides of the cooking equipment it covers. This overhang catches rising heat and grease-laden air before it escapes into the kitchen, rather than only capturing what rises straight up.

Height Above Appliances

Standard clearance between the underside of the canopy and the cooking surface is typically 90cm-100cm for most equipment, though open-flame appliances like chargrills may require additional clearance for fire safety.

Length Along the Cooking Line

Measure the full length of your cooking line — fryers, ranges, griddles — wall to wall, then round up to the nearest standard size (we manufacture 200cm, 250cm, 300cm, 400cm, and 500cm as standard, with custom sizes available for anything in between or larger).

Depth

Our standard canopy depth is 110cm, which comfortably covers most single-line cooking equipment; deeper or L-shaped configurations are available as a custom order.

Getting these numbers wrong is one of the most common (and expensive) mistakes in a kitchen fit-out — send us your equipment layout and we'll confirm the right size before you order.
